If you’re dealing with back pain, neck pain, or other physical complaints, you’re probably wondering:how often should I see a chiropractor? The short answer is: it varies from person to person. How often you need treatment depends on your symptoms, how long they’ve been present, and what you want to achieve.

What is chiropractic care?

Chiropractic care focuses on restoring the movement function of the musculoskeletal system, with special attention to the spine. The spine protects the nervous system and plays an important role in how the body functions.

When joints or spinal segments don’t move properly, this can lead to pain, stiffness, or other complaints. Chiropractic care aims to improve that function so the body can recover more effectively.

When do you see a chiropractor?

You can visit a chiropractor for, among other things:

  • back and neck complaints
  • headaches or migraines
  • joint pain
  • restricted movement
  • complaints that keep coming back

When symptoms affect your daily functioning or don’t improve on their own, chiropractic care may be a suitable option.

How often should you see a chiropractor?

How often you come in depends on several factors:

  • the severity of your complaints
  • how long the symptoms have been present
  • your age and overall health
  • how your body responds to treatment

At the beginning, it’s often necessary to treat more regularly, for example weekly or every two weeks. As symptoms improve, the frequency is usually reduced.

It’s good to know that many people only see a chiropractor when symptoms have already been present for a longer time. Often, they have already tried other treatments.

This usually means the underlying cause of the complaints is more complex. If it had been a simple issue, the symptoms would often have resolved earlier.

Some people think:it came on by itself, so it will go away by itself. In practice, we often see symptoms slowly increase over time.

As a result, it may take more time and multiple treatments to help the body function well again. This can sometimes feel confronting, but it does provide a realistic and honest picture of the recovery process.

The first consultation at Chiropractie Blaauw

At your first appointment, a thorough examination is central. We follow a set of fixed steps:

Step 1 – Questionnaire and consultation

You will receive a questionnaire in advance. During the appointment, we discuss your symptoms, health, and daily strain.

Step 2 – Physical examination

We examine posture, movement, muscle strength, reflexes, balance, coordination, and eye movements. We also check whether the left and right sides of the body are functioning equally.

Step 3 – Movement assessment

The joints of the spine (and, if needed, the arms and legs) are tested individually. A joint can function in a restricted way, even if you can still move fairly smoothly.

Step 4 – Diagnosis and treatment plan

Based on all findings, we discuss whether chiropractic care is suitable, what you can expect, and what the treatment plan may look like.

What about reimbursement?

Most health insurers reimburse chiropractic care from a supplementary package. Depending on your insurance, 6 to 20 treatments per year are often (partly) reimbursed.

Many packages reimburse, for example, a fixed amount per treatment, with an annual maximum. The exact reimbursement varies by insurer and policy.
Check your policy terms or visit chiropractievergoeding.nl for an indication of what your insurer reimburses.

What are the benefits of chiropractic care?

Regardless of frequency, chiropractic care can contribute to:

  • reduced pain
  • better mobility and flexibility
  • less muscle tension and stress
  • improved posture and movement patterns

The goal is not only to reduce symptoms, but also to help the body function better.

So how often do you go to a chiropractor?

How often you see a chiropractor is always personalised. In the beginning it may be more frequent, and later less. Some people also choose to come preventively, to avoid issues rather than treat them.

Many people continue to come back periodically after their treatment plan, for example a few times a year. Not because they have to, but because they notice their body keeps functioning better.

Sometimes this also means you consciously choose balance instead of limitation.

For example, think of a young father with back pain who, despite his symptoms, still wants to be able to play with his child. Lifting and roughhousing may not be ideal for the back, but they are important for his life.

Instead of avoiding everything, guidance can help you handle this and keep symptoms under control. That way, it remains possible to stay active and do what matters to you.
