Pain around the pelvis and pubic bone
Pelvic instability is common during or after pregnancy and is also known as symphysiolysis (symphysis pubis dysfunction). With these symptoms, pain develops around the pelvic joints and the pubic bone (symphysis).
During pregnancy, hormonal changes cause the ligaments in the body to become more flexible. This is a normal process, intended to prepare the body for childbirth. Sometimes, however, these ligaments become too lax, meaning the pelvis does not have enough stability.
What happens with pelvic instability?
When the ligaments weaken, there is too much movement in the pelvis. The pelvis is then less able to support body weight. This can lead to pain and a feeling of instability during everyday movements.
Common symptoms include:
- pain when sitting, standing, or walking
- difficulty turning over in bed
- pain when climbing stairs or standing on one leg
- symptoms that worsen with prolonged strain
The pain may build up gradually, but it can also start suddenly.
What can a chiropractor do for pelvic instability?
Treating pelvic instability requires a different approach than treating a blockage or fixation in the pelvis. The focus is not on mobilising, but rather on stabilising.
Treatment may include:
- stabilising chiropractic adjustments
- targeted exercises to support the pelvis
- advice on posture and load management
- using a pelvic belt for extra support
Good muscle balance around the pelvis is essential to reduce symptoms and prevent further overload.
Pelvic instability doesn’t only occur during pregnancy
Although pelvic instability is often associated with pregnancy, it can also occur in people who are not pregnant. Both men and women can experience weakened ligaments.
Possible causes include:
- poor posture
- physically demanding work
- prolonged or one-sided strain on the pelvis
In all of these situations, the pelvis can lose its stability, resulting in pain.
