Whiplash

whiplash

A whiplash is more than just a neck complaint. In a whiplash injury, the body is suddenly accelerated and then decelerated, which can directly affect the nervous system. Precisely because the nervous system is the body’s central control system, symptoms can be very diverse and sometimes difficult to explain.

In chiropractic care, a well-functioning nervous system is central. Treatment for whiplash therefore focuses on restoring the function of the nervous system, so the body can respond and recover better.

What happens in a whiplash?

A whiplash injury can cause damage to different structures, such as:

  • skin and muscles
  • ligaments and joints
  • bones and blood vessels
  • the nervous system

The nervous system consists of nerves, the spinal cord, the brainstem, and the brain. This system is particularly sensitive to excessive stretching and sudden forces. When this load is too great, the nervous system can become dysregulated.

Some injuries are visible on X-rays, a CT scan, or an MRI. Many functional symptoms that people experience after a whiplash, however, are not visible with these techniques.

Why symptoms can vary so much

Not everyone responds the same way to a whiplash injury. Even after a similar accident, symptoms can differ greatly from person to person. This has to do with predisposition, fitness, previous strain, and how the nervous system processes stimuli.

When the nervous system is disrupted, the body may respond less effectively to information from the environment. This can show up as a wide range of symptoms.

Possible disruptions in a whiplash

A whiplash injury can affect how the nervous system functions in different ways:

Disrupted muscle sensors

The stretch receptors in muscles can be damaged. As a result, the information sent to the central nervous system becomes less reliable. This can lead to difficulty sensing body posture and position in space.

Damage to nerve fibers

With damage to nerve fibers (axonal degeneration), impulse conduction becomes slower. This can affect strength, speed, and coordination.

Disrupted central processing

When the processing of nerve impulses in the brain is disrupted, the following can occur, among other things:

  • reduced balance
  • coordination problems
  • disrupted eye movements
  • instability of the trunk and limbs

These processes explain why symptoms such as dizziness, concentration problems, or a feeling of instability may develop.

Assessment and diagnosis for whiplash

With a whiplash injury, we don’t just look at where the pain is felt, but at the functioning of the body as a whole. The consultation provides insight into the pattern of symptoms, but it doesn’t tell the full story of how the body’s systems work together.

That is why the examination includes, among other things:

  • testing sensory systems such as hearing and vision
  • assessing motor functions such as posture, balance and coordination
  • analysis of eye-tracking movements
  • movement assessment of the spine

When necessary, imaging such as X-rays can be a useful addition. However, this remains a snapshot and does not say everything about how the body functions.

A reduced neck curve (lordosis) can indicate instability in the neck. In that case, additional tests may be used to map muscle tension and movement patterns more clearly.

Whiplash treatment by the chiropractor

Chiropractic treatment for whiplash focuses on improving neurological function. Using carefully dosed impulses, we work to restore the cooperation between the spine, muscles and nervous system.

By reducing functional disturbances, the body has more room to adapt and recover. Treatment is always tailored to your symptoms, capacity and pace of recovery.
