Pelvic pain is common during pregnancy. Sometimes it remains mild, but it can also become so severe that walking, turning over in bed, or climbing stairs is difficult. In some cases, this involves pelvic instability. What exactly happens in your body, and what can you do?
What is pelvic pain during pregnancy?
During pregnancy, your hormones make the ligaments and joints more flexible. This is necessary for your baby’s growth and for childbirth, but it also makes the pelvis less stable.
Pelvic pain can present as:
- pain in the lower back
- pain around the pubic bone
- pain in the groin
- pain on one or both sides of the pelvis
- pain radiating to the buttocks or legs
Symptoms often worsen with movement and ease with rest, but they can also be present at night.
What is pelvic instability?
With pelvic instability, there is too much mobility in the pelvic joints. As a result, the pelvis is less able to support and distribute body weight.
This can lead to:
- pain when walking or standing
- difficulty turning over in bed
- a feeling of instability
- pain when climbing stairs or standing on one leg
- rapid muscle fatigue
Pelvic instability can occur during pregnancy, but also after pregnancy.
Why do these symptoms occur?
Pelvic pain and pelvic instability often arise from a combination of:
- hormonal changes
- changes in posture and centre of gravity
- increasing load
- reduced muscle coordination
- previous back or pelvic problems
The body has to continually adapt. If that adaptation doesn’t go well, symptoms develop.
When should you be alert?
Mild symptoms in the last few months are common. But it’s wise to take action if:
- symptoms start early in pregnancy
- pain interferes with daily activities
- the pain keeps increasing
- rest provides little relief
The sooner function is supported, the better the body can adapt.
What can chiropractic care do for pelvic pain?
Chiropractic care focuses on the function of the pelvis, the spine, and the nervous system. The goal is not to make the pelvis “looser”, but rather to:
- improve coordination between joints
- distribute tension more effectively
- help muscles work together more effectively
- support stability
The techniques are gentle, controlled, and fully adapted to pregnancy.
Is treatment different during pregnancy?
Yes. Treatment is adapted to:
- your stage of pregnancy
- your symptoms
- your capacity
We work in comfortable positions, without pressure on the abdomen, and with attention to relaxation and safety.
Can chiropractic care also help preventively?
Yes. Many women start preventively to:
- prevent symptoms
- help the pelvis function better
- support the body through the changes
This can help keep symptoms milder or even prevent them.
Pelvic pain is a signal, not a given
Pelvic pain and pelvic instability are not just “part of it”. They are a signal that your body needs support with the changes of pregnancy. By paying timely attention to function and balance, you can reduce symptoms and keep moving more comfortably.
