Scoliosis is a curvature of the spine, in which the spine curves sideways. This condition usually develops at a young age, often during growth spurts.
With scoliosis, the spine is not straight but forms a curve. Sometimes this is accompanied by a rotation of the vertebrae, which can also make the torso and shoulders asymmetrical.
How can you recognise scoliosis?
Are you unsure whether your child might have scoliosis? There is a simple way to do a general check yourself.
Have your child:
- stand with their upper body uncovered
- with their back facing you
- slowly bend forward
Pay attention to:
- the line of the spine
- the position of the shoulder blades
Do you see a clear curve or a bulge on one side of the back (also called a rib hump )? If so, there may be scoliosis.
For a reliable assessment, it is wise to have your child’s back checked by a chiropractor.
What causes scoliosis?
The cause of scoliosis can vary. Sometimes it is due to:
- a bone abnormality
- problems in the nervous system
- muscle or connective tissue abnormalities
In about 80% of cases the exact cause is not known. This is called idiopathic scoliosis . Precisely because the cause is often unclear, it is important to check children’s spines regularly, especially during growth.
What symptoms can scoliosis cause?
In children, scoliosis usually causes no pain. This can sometimes make it difficult to recognise the condition early.
Still, scoliosis can have consequences, such as:
- a change in posture
- asymmetry of the shoulders or torso
- in more severe cases: reduced lung function
The longer scoliosis goes unnoticed, the greater the chance that the curve will increase during growth.
Treatment for scoliosis
The earlier scoliosis is detected, the greater the chance of successful treatment. Treatment focuses on:
- monitoring and guiding growth
- optimising movement function
- limiting any further increase in the curve
Whether treatment is needed and which approach is appropriate is always determined based on a careful examination.
